*VOLUNTEER AND CLASS PACKETS HAVE GONE OUT-

Have you heard the news......studies show that kids whose parents volunteer at school
tend to do better academically than other kids? By volunteering even one hour of your
time you are sending a clear, unspoken message to your kids, their teachers, and the principal
that you want the best education possible for your children.
So why not get involved??
The Salem HSA has many opportunities for all parents to volunteer and get connected to the school. Volunteer Packets
and Class Parent Applications for the 2010/2011 School year have been sent home. Please look through them and contact
any member of the 2010/2011 Executive Board with comments, questions or concerns. Contact information is included in
the packet. If you did not receive a packet, please contact Heidi Jarach (salemhsacopres1@gmail.com) or Gail Seiden (salemcopres2@gmail.com).

*H.S.A sponsors Arithemetickles will be performing at Salem on: Thurs. May 27th.
Ask your children about the presentation!
The Arithmetickles site is:http://www.arithmetickles.com

Arithmetickles is a one-of-a-kind, interactive, math show school assembly that involves students in the learning process. Many youngsters have difficulty identifying the connection between classroom math and their daily lives. This may cause them to view math as irrelevant, too difficult, or just plain boring. But Arithmetickles school assembly math shows shatter this notion with fun-filled math games that provide examples of how to use textbook math in everyday situations.

Through a skillful blending of audience participation, comedy, mime and theatrical effects, the fast-paced math games and skits in Arithmetickles school assemblies capture the attention of children in grades K-8. Age-appropriate material is set in a “kid-friendly” math show format of games, puzzles, scenarios and storytelling, affording students a chance to explore and resolve math problems creatively. By using elements of highly creative children’s theater and encouraging students to succeed on stage in front of their peers, Arithmetickles also helps increase overall confidence and self-esteem and demonstrates how cool math can be.

*Nutrition Tips
submitted by the Nutrition Committee

When it comes to sweets and treats, talk with your kids about appropriate serving size -- ½ cup ice cream or frozen yogurt, 2 cookies, 1 ounce of chocolate. Talk about the difference between real foods and treats and remind them that treats and not meant to fill you up like a meal. Help your children make decisions about how to incorporate treats and sweets into an overall healthful diet.

*Green Tips

Spare landfills and save money by refilling bottles with tap water!
