Hurricane Sandy, the Mega Storm, Could Not Dampen Port Washington School District's Spirit of Giving

Dear Salem Families,

Sandy, the terrible Mega Storm, impacted most Long Islanders - unfortunately, some worse then others. Several Days after Sandy hit, an email went out that our Port Washington School District Community was adopting the District of Oceanside, which was hit hard. Unfortunately, all of Oceanside's supplies were destroyed and needed to be replaced. Many Salem families, and much of our community, were still without power and in the midst of cleaning up. But this did not stop you from coming out and showing your support for our South Shore Neighboring District. Salem's cafeteria tables were overflowing with new supplies that had been donated. This was true of all the schools in Port Washington's School District.

The delivery of school supplies went off without a hitch, and we filled an Oceanside School Gymnasium with supplies. Oceanside Administrators were truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and the volume of donations from Port Washington! This wonderful selfless gesture helped so many students, teachers, and families breathe a sigh of relief, and made it that much easier for the Oceanside District to open their doors again.

It is hard to express the pride and appreciation for the manner in which the Salem School District participated in this drive. The donations made by so many students, families, and staff members truly embodied the community service spirit that defines Salem School and the Port Washington School District as a whole.

Thanks and Appreciation,

Chris and Dawn
