Essay by Aliya Nachimson
Dear Mrs. Strianese,
When I got the letter I got excited that I was going
to be in your class. Your past kids in your class said you were mean
but I did not believe them. All of my friends were in a different class.
I had a little shy moment when I met you but I started to like you by
talking.
I thought that we would have a great year because
you sounded very nice. You kept saying that you were mean but you really
weren’t. On the first day I was nervous and excited because I
would get to see my friends and I thought my teacher would not like
me. The best part of the first week was making good friends. I really
liked the Do now because it was fun to do some morning work each day.
I really liked who I sat with because it was a good table. A few weeks
later we had to switch tables. I still was at a good table. I also liked
the reading responses because I like to read.
Thank you for being a really nice teacher and for
helping me with stuff that I am having trouble with, Just like Math.
Thank you for all the treats and movies. Thanks for giving me compliments
because it makes me feel good. One of my favorite read alouds was JOEY
PIGZA SWALLOWED THE KEY.
I didn’t know what a memoir was until you taught
the class. My sister doesn’t know what a memoir is. I guess that
I should show her. I give you a big thank you for helping me when I
was bullied. I really like your reading voice when you make your voice
high or low to make it sound like that person. Thank you for our hedgehog
Spike. Spike is really cute. I will never feed him mealworms because
they freak me out because they have legs. I once tried and I yelled
EEEEEWWW! But I might watch. You are really good at explaining stuff.
Whenever I am confused and I ask a second time you help me understand
it.
You are one of my favorite teachers. Thanks for teaching
me really hard math lessons. They are tricky. I really like your math
lessons. Whenever I forget or did not do something I will fix that problem.
Thank you for choosing me really nice subs. Cafe Joanna is really fun.
Thanks for telling my Mom what is best for me. Thank you for making
the class a fun room. You are a creative teacher. Whenever I need to
work on something just tell me and I will work on it. My favorite subjects
are spelling and writing because I just love to write and spell words.
I love to use a pencil. Thank you for being alive because if you weren:t,
then I wouldn’t have a teacher as nice as you. Thank you for choosing
me really good book choices. When you started book choices that got
me into books. I also like line order because then no one will fight
over that spot. Thank you for being a nice teacher and for helping me
learn.
Sincerely,
Aliya Nachimson
What's Happening at Salem

Last Call for Caps...
If you have been collecting them for the Town of North Hempstead contest,
now is the time to send them in. We will be turning them in on Friday,
May 11 so all caps must be in school by Thursday afternoon. It isn't
too late to collect, because every one counts.
Salem HSA Meeting:
Our next meeting is schedule on May 8th at 11:00 at Daly Elementary
Multipurpose Room. We do this annual joint meeting to have a budget
presentation from Mary Callahan, Assistant Superintendent of Business.
We will also be voting on next years Executive Board. Refreshments will
be served.
Plant Sale: May 10 and 11th.
You should have received a schedule in your backpack of when your child
will be going to the plant sale. You are welcome to come and meet your
child to shop with them, or you can just send in money for them to pick
out some great flowers or plants. If you have any questions, please
contact Yvonne Knapp or Laura Hall.

BUDGET HELP Urgently needed: the
Budget Committee needs flyer volunteers! Handing out flyers before the
School Budget vote helps remind people to vote, gives them reasons to
vote "YES", and represents Port Washington students and families
in a way that emails and telephone calls cannot! Please contribute 1
hour of your time to prevent a devastating "contingency" (austerity)
budget, as well as approve a bond to repair decrepit roofs at Weber
and Schreiber. Leafletting will be at Let There Be Bagels on Sunday,
May 13, Monday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 15 from 8:30-5:30 (end time).
You will get flyers, talking points, and a polling place map... and
huge THANKS for your vital participation. Contact Bill Keller (wmkell@hotmail.com)
or Meredith Williams (meredithw@optonline.net) to sign up.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon May 18, 2012.
Parents and Students...We need your help!
Next week, the donation letter will be sent home through your child's
backpacks. Please look for the form and send back your intended contribution
to this annual event.
In addition, we have posted a form on the Salem Website (www.salemhsa.org)
for you to print out (in color, if possible) and for your child to decorate,
choosing a teacher to thank with a sentence or two about what makes
him/her a good teacher. Your child(ren) can make as many as they wish,
honoring their present, as well as past, teachers. It's a simple form
with a cute graphic, meant to take only a few minutes of your/your child's
time. Place the completed form in an envelope marked "Staff Appreciation
Lunch" and send back to school by Thursday, May 17. Please encourage
your child to make one or many! And don't forget the Special Area teachers
and Assistants!
Aloha! Spring Book Fair
is around the corner and we are looking for some volunteers! The book
fair runs from Monday, May 14th-Thursday, May 17th with evening hours

and of any time in between. Class schedules will be coming home in backpacks
soon. Please note...sales tax will apply. If you would like to volunteer
or have any questions please contact us at pokey723@optonline.net and
hjarach@me.com
