What's
Happening at Salem Budget Vote: On Tuesday May 21, we have our District Budget vote. It is important that we all go and vote, as every vote counts. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to come out as well. Voting is from 6:00 am-10:00 pm. If you are unsure where you vote, please check the district website; www.portnet.k12.ny.us. Drop off and Pick Up: On Tuesday May 21, we are asking that you keep in mind that there is increased traffic as Salem is a polling place. We encourage use of the bus, or to walk in. Additionally, there is limited lunch service, so please plan accordingly. New Traffic Pattern: As you may have noticed, we have a new traffic pattern for pick up at Salem. From 2:30-3:15, Guilford becomes one way at Lynn. You must go around the block and make a right turn into the school, and then a right turn out of the school. Salem Book Club: On Thursday May 23, the Friends of Literacy Committee will be holding its second book club at Salem. Please contact Sue Hershkowitz (shaurin@aol.com) with any questions. Boxtops for Education: Please send in your Boxtops so we can do one last mailing before the end of the year. Although you are more than welcome to hold on to some for next year, if any are expiring before the end of this year, then send them in, as they won’t be honored. Volunteer Packets and Class Parents Forms are Due: Please take a look through the volunteer packet and send in. If you want to be considered to be a class parent for next year, the deadline is June 7th. Compact Committee Forms: If you would like to be on the Compact Committee, please send in your forms asap. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Nadolne; christirdh@aol.com. Salem Large Photo: On Friday June 14, at 10 am, we will be having a large Salem photo taken to be displayed for opening of the 10th year of Salem. We are inviting all present, past and next years kindergarten to be a part of the picture. If you would prefer to have your child held from this photo, please contact Mr. Shields. Literacy Tip of the Week: Talk to children about the letters and words you are writing when you write a message to a family member. Encourage them to help you write part of the message. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Field Day: On Friday June 7, we will be having our Annual Field Day. Hurricane
Sandy, the Mega Storm, Could Not Dampen Port Washington School District's
Spirit of Giving Sandy, the terrible Mega Storm, impacted most Long
Islanders - unfortunately, some worse then others. Several Days after
Sandy hit, an email went out that our Port Washington School District
Community was adopting the District of Oceanside, which was hit hard.
Unfortunately, all of Oceanside's supplies were destroyed and needed
to be replaced. Many Salem families, and much of our community, were
still without power and in the midst of cleaning up. But this did not
stop you from coming out and showing your support for our South Shore
Neighboring District. Salem's cafeteria tables were overflowing with
new supplies that had been donated. This was true of all the schools
in Port Washington's School District. It is hard to express the pride and appreciation for the manner in which the Salem School District participated in this drive. The donations made by so many students, families, and staff members truly embodied the community service spirit that defines Salem School and the Port Washington School District as a whole. Thanks and Appreciation, Chris and Dawn Brought to you by Salem HSA a 501 C3 organization |
